How Finance Ledger works

From first registration to organised data and useful insights—every step, screen and automatic check in one place.

BEFORE YOUR FIRST IMPORT

You only need three things

  1. 1

    Confirmed accountEmail and secure session

  2. 2

At least one accountCurrent, savings or credit card

  3. 3

CSV or Revolut Excel statementThe filename does not matter

Prepare your account

After confirming registration, create your private financial workspace and first account. You only do this once.

  • The workspace isolates your data
  • The account is where the statement is attached
  • More accounts can be added later from Settings

STEP 2 OF 2

Add your first account

Your bank statements will be attached to it.

01

Set your period

The period determines which income and spending belong to the same personal financial cycle. It usually starts on your payday.

  • Choose the first day of the period
  • Periods are calculated automatically
  • An early salary can be assigned to the next period

02

Attach the statement to the correct account

Select the account and then the CSV or Revolut Excel (.xlsx) statement. The filename does not matter—the selected account defines the connection.

  • CSV and Revolut Excel up to 5 MB and 5,000 transactions are supported
  • Upload one file for each account
  • Repeat for current, savings and credit-card accounts

03

Review before adding

Finance Ledger shows how every row was read, which transactions are new and which resemble existing entries. This is your checkpoint before saving.

  • Check date, description, category and amount
  • Duplicate rows are marked and skipped
  • Nothing is saved until you confirm

Categorisation and reconciliation

After import, the system categorises recognised merchants and reconciles movements between your accounts. Unknown groups remain for a short manual review.

  • One rule also applies to future imports
  • Internal transfers do not inflate income or spending
  • Credit-card payments are not counted twice

FAQ

The most common questions, answered upfront

These are the rules worth knowing before your first real import.

Is the application free?+

Yes. Finance Ledger is completely free to use, with no subscription fee or hidden paid features.

Which banks and file formats do you support?+

CSV import is verified with DSK Bank statements, while Revolut Excel (.xlsx) is supported for Revolut. A CSV from another bank may work when its columns are compatible, but we do not list it as officially supported until it has been validated with a real anonymised statement.

Where is my data stored and how secure is it?+

Your account and financial data are stored in a managed cloud database. Access is limited to your financial workspace, requests are authenticated, and the connection is encrypted. From Settings, you can download a copy of your data or delete your account.

Does the file need a specific name?+

No. The filename does not determine the account or period. You select the account before upload, and transaction dates determine the period.

How do I import several accounts?+

Upload a separate supported file for each account and select the correct account each time. You can repeat the step for the same period.

Will a repeated import duplicate transactions?+

Before committing, the system shows new and duplicate rows. Detected duplicates are skipped.

Is a transfer to savings an expense?+

No. When both sides are available, the system reconciles movements between your accounts and reports the net movement without inflating income or spending.

How is a credit-card payment handled?+

The payment is matched as an account movement so it is not counted as spending again after the card purchases.

What if a category is wrong?+

Edit it in Transactions. For a recurring merchant, create a rule that will be used on future imports.

Can I correct an older period?+

Yes. After changing older transactions, use Recalculate all periods. If an import is entirely wrong, deleting the period removes its related data so you can upload it again cleanly.

What can I change in the demo?+

The demo is read-only. You can navigate and try filters, but write actions do not change persistent data.
